R.I.P Tony Banks

Yet another of these mini obits. This time it is for someone who I actually had the privilege to meet. About ten years ago he opened an art exhibit of AIDS posters which was housed at my university. He shook everyone's hand and chatted to everyone, plus he had a great sense of humour. It was a really nice evening.
Tony Banks stood down as MP for West Ham at the 2004 General Election, he was elevated to the house of lords where he took the title Lord Stratford. Although he said he didn't expect any one to use the title.

He was one of the last MP's who seemed to have any sort of personality - a contrast to all the opinion-free, shop window dummies who are getting ahead in politics these days. Strange that his death hasn't merited more attention.
Yes it is strange. He definatly had a great personality, when I met him at an opening he didn't bang on about politics at all.
He was certainly one of the best MPs of his generation. We must ensure that Dennis Skinner continues the good work
I was really surprised that his funeral only merited a small photo in the newspaper. I thought the event would have been seen as a passing of an era.
I think his family didn't want a fuss at the Funeral, there will be a Memorial service at Westminster soon, which will be the more public event.
